New York to Host ad:tech in November

ad:tech New York will be held at the Javits Center on Wednesday November 4th and Thursday November 5th. It is an advertising and technology exhibition and conference where the communities of media, technology and marketing meet to build strong partnerships, find new ways of thinking, and create new strategies to address the opportunities and challenges in the digital marketing and advertising industries.

The focus of the conference is the Expo Floor where there will be over 200 solution providers, educational forums and technology start-ups. Several new features have been added to the Expo Floor this year. One is the Playground where attendees can play a game of air hockey, beer pong and many more and enjoy a happy hour on the first day of the conference.

Online display advertising started out in the 1980s as a partnership between Sears and IBM, known as Prodigy, primarily designed to promote products from Sears. The pioneering efforts of Prodigy were followed by those of Network Navigator in the 1990s, and then by Hotwired, the first commercial magazine on the web.

It was Hotwired, however, that coined the term “banner advertising”, which was a way of selling ad spaces in large quantities on their website where banners ads could be displayed. Proceeds from these ads would be used to pay their writers. Coors and AT&T were among the first big companies to buy these online ads from Hotwired. Since then, online display advertising has grown into a multi-billion-dollar industry and is now second to advertising on broadcast television. **
