Over the past decade the many innovations in technology such as mobile, social media, email and many others have developed a new breed of customers that have many more tools available to them to make informed decisions about their purchases. This means that marketers need to focus on improving their targeting strategies, engaging in more customer-centric engagements, using technology to respond to buyer’s actions in real-time, using analytics to track and measure marketing investments and, finally, aligning technology to simplify business and marketing processes.

It is here where marketing automation comes into play, using software to automate marketing processes such as management of marketing campaigns, customer-data integration and customer segmentation to make processes that would have been performed manually more effective and efficient. In addition, some new processes may also be explored and used to enhance marketing activities.
